My Life Between Two Worlds: A Sudanese Girl in the UK
My name is Amina, and I’m a 22-year-old girl from Khartoum, Sudan. A few years ago, I moved to the United Kingdom to pursue my studies and build a new life. Leaving home was not easy — I missed my family, the warmth of Sudan, and the rhythm of my language and culture. But I came with hope and determination.
At first, life in the UK felt overwhelming. Everything was unfamiliar — from the cold weather to the fast-paced English conversations. I often felt out of place. But slowly, I started finding pieces of home in the little things: the taste of Sudanese tea I made in my kitchen, the WhatsApp calls with my mom, and the Sudanese community I met at university.
I study biomedical science now, and I dream of working in global health one day. I’ve also been volunteering at a refugee center, helping other people who are starting their journey like I did. It makes me feel connected — like I can give something back.
Being Sudanese is a big part of who I am. I wear my tobe proudly at cultural events and love sharing dishes like kisra with my friends. But I also appreciate the things I’ve learned in the UK — independence, resilience, and open-mindedness.
Today, I live between two cultures. I carry Sudan in my heart, but the UK has shaped me in beautiful ways. This journey is teaching me who I am, and who I want to be.
